What Is the Ideal Refrigerator Temperature?

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recommended temperature range for a refrigerator is between 35°F and 40°F (2°C and 4°C). Most foods maintain their quality when stored at these temperatures. However, it’s important to note that meat and fish products are more susceptible to spoilage and should be stored below 37°F (3°C). Monitoring the temperature inside your refrigerator is crucial for ensuring food safety and freshness.

Monitoring and Maintaining Optimal Refrigerator Temperature

Most foods stay fresh when stored at the recommended temperatures mentioned above. Refrigerator temperatures can vary significantly across different shelves, making it challenging to rely solely on the fridge’s thermostat for optimal conditions.

If the temperature inside a refrigerator exceeds 40°F (4°C), bacteria in the food will start to multiply rapidly. Additionally, cold air helps preserve food by slowing down the natural ripening process of fruits and vegetables. For more information on recommended storage temperatures, refer to the guidelines provided by the FDA.

Avoid placing warm food directly into the refrigerator to optimize temperature control and minimize energy consumption. Warm food introduces moisture, which condenses and freezes in colder temperatures. Frost buildup on the inner surfaces of the fridge can disrupt its functioning and increase energy costs. It’s important to note that the temperature on the door shelves is significantly warmer than the inside of the fridge, and it doesn’t decrease as much as it does in the back of the fridge.

Use the MOCREO sensor to monitor the temperature of your refrigerator and freezer, ensuring food safety and reducing food waste. The sensor comes with a slim and flat external temperature probe specifically designed for refrigerators, measuring only 1.3mm thick, so it won’t affect the seal of your fridge. Simply place the external temperature probe inside the fridge and attach the sensor to the outside, without worrying about cold air damaging the device.

With the MOCREO Sensor App, you can easily monitor the temperature anytime, anywhere, and receive timely alerts (including Hub Beep, email notifications, and app push notifications) when the temperature exceeds the set threshold. This helps you better manage food storage and freshness, ensuring the quality and safety of your food.

Temperature in the crisper

The temperature inside the crisper doesn’t need to be as cold as the areas where you store meat, fish, and dairy products. However, it shouldn’t be too warm to avoid freezing the vegetables. The primary purpose of the crisper compartment is to maintain humidity, creating an optimal environment for keeping vegetables fresh for longer periods.

In some refrigerators, you have the option to choose between high or low humidity settings for the crisper. High humidity is ideal for vegetables, while low humidity is better for fruits. Remember not to store vegetables and fruits together because certain fruits release ethylene, which accelerates the ripening and spoilage of vegetables.

Conveniently monitor the temperature and air humidity inside the vegetable compartment using MOCREO sensors.
